Lunar New Year Greetings: A Cycle of Becoming

Published on April 20, 2026

This collection began with a question:

What does it mean to truly flourish?

Not just in a moment—but over time. Across seasons. Through everything we experience as human beings.

When I turned to Lunar New Year traditions, I realized that many of the phrases we grow up seeing—written on red paper, hung on doors, exchanged between families—are not just greetings.

They are reflections of how we live, the wishes we hold, and the cheer we spread to deepen connection and understanding across generations.

Rooted in the visual language of Lunar New Year and traditional Chinese calligraphy, this collection explores the full arc of human experience—how we receive, feel, renew, achieve, and endure in order to truly flourish.

Each character represents a distinct yet interconnected state of being:

福 (fortune) reminds us to receive—welcoming blessings, opportunities, and the unseen forces that support us.

喜 (joy) invites us to feel—fully and openly—honoring connection, celebration, and shared happiness.

春 (spring) marks renewal—where energy shifts, cycles turn, and new life begins to emerge.

From this foundation, we move into action:

勝 (victory) embodies the pursuit and realization of what we strive toward, shaped by effort and intention.

毅 (perseverance) grounds us in the strength required to continue—to remain steady, resilient, and unwavering through time.

Together, these are not steps in a straight line.

They form a cycle.

To receive is to open.

To feel is to connect.

To renew is to begin again.

To achieve is to realize.

To endure is to sustain, to welcome the opportunity to flourish.

And then—we return again.

In this way, flourishing is not a destination.

It is a way of being.

Something we move through, again and again, each time with a little more awareness, a little more depth.

This understanding was not shaped alone.

It was refined through conversations with my mother—across generations, across lived experiences. Together, we explored not just the meanings of these characters, but how they are understood, carried, and felt. While I took a first pass at the strongest pairing of phrases with the characters, she took the second pass and confirmed or fine-tuned my suggestions.

Her guidance grounded the work in lineage.

Her perspective ensured that what we created was not just visually inspired—but meaningfully aligned.

This collection is offered in both traditional and simplified Chinese characters.

That choice was intentional.

These two forms of writing reflect not only differences in script, but differences in history, geography, and lived experience. Each carries its own familiarity—its own sense of home—for those who read it.

Rather than choosing one over the other, we chose to hold both.

Because this collection is not about a single, fixed expression of culture—but about the many ways it is carried, remembered, and lived.

In our own family, this distinction is meaningful. It reflects the bridging of generations, the movement across places, and the ways language continues to evolve while still holding its roots.

Traditional and simplified are not separate stories.

They are part of the same continuum.

Different forms—shared meaning.

In that way, the collection remains open:

Allowing each person to connect in the way that feels most natural to them.

Recognizing that culture, like the seasons it honors, is always in motion.

Visually, each piece draws from traditional forms:

Diamond compositions that symbolize balance and harmony.

Brush-inspired strokes that carry movement and energy.

Flowing, auspicious elements where meaning is not static—but circulating, gathering, and returning.

Because these characters are not just symbols.

They are alive.

And perhaps that is what this collection is really about.

Not simply celebrating Lunar New Year.

But recognizing that we, too, move through seasons.

We receive.

We feel.

We begin again.

We strive.

We endure.

And through it all, we learn—again and again—how to flourish.

These hoodies are not just garments.

They are reminders.

Of where we are in the cycle.

Of what is available to us.

Of what is already within us.

Something to carry with us—

through every season.
